I received a picture from a business associate this week that was captioned “enough said”. It didn’t help to understand the circumstances but it was clear the outcome was positive and those involved were pleased. I seem to have more time to reflect today that I did before retirement and the picture at Jug Mountain golf course tells the story – I think I stood in that position for 10 minutes waiting for the group ahead of us to play. Generally, in the past I would have invested that time in stressing out over the delay. On this occasion, I simply enjoyed the awesome view and my good fortune to be there on a memorable day.
We hear that “every picture tells a story”. I believe that is true and not just because Rod Stewart sang about it. The other picture is “Gummi”, great uncle Mike, and the beautiful Maci at Brother Bob’s 75th birthday bash. Maci was delighted to have each member of the family wear the hat with style. Actually, I sent my daughter Katie so many pictures this week she was a bit overwhelmed. As I watched the Olympics I was impressed with the USA women’s 100 meter hurdles group – gold, silver and bronze for them. I saw a picture where all three were jumping high in the air with winning smiles and each draped with our flag. Seems to me that America is doing pretty well in many ways including our athletes.
There is no clear origin for this idiom or proverb. My search for the origin did lead me to a related quote-“every picture is worth a thousand words” or more accurately “ten thousand words”. On March 10, 1927 Fred R. Barnard who wrote for The Printers Ink reportedly penned those famous words. It is clear and probably not even debatable that pictures are an important form of communication. Instagram, Snapchat, Facebook, and many others have become a part of the social fabric of our lives and allow us to stay engaged with just a short quote, idiom or proverb that keeps us connected.
If you don’t have your iPhone connected through the cloud to your smart television. You should check it out. Every day that you take pictures they download as the screen saver, hundreds of your pictures scroll through the set and you can sit and watch for hours as those memories are restored. You do need to be careful what you are capturing on the camera as I have pictures of the inside of my McCall toilet tank that I took to show the helpful people at Grovers.
I would close with words of wisdom from Rod Stewart ” I wish I know what I know now before.” Yes indeed Rod, hindsight tells a clear story.
Enjoy the week end. Mike
