It reminded me of the boy who cried wolf, when there was finally a real threat, no one paid any attention. Katie and Holt went to their birthing class on the first day of April getting ready for April 24th and Clio’s expected birthday. Katie started having contractions and asked the teacher what she should do. The suggestion was go to the hospital. Expecting a short stay she ventured there and after an hour of observation was advised she should stay. Good advice from the always dependable team at St. Luke’s. Katie and Holt have a lot of friends and when they started letting them know of the development, of course everyone thought it was a joke! No really – I am in labor. It seems amazing that from morning practice the baby arrived naturally at 9:45pm. Mother and child are doing well with a few of those issues faced by premature kids nearly in the rear view mirror by today. Please join me in welcoming Clio Thomas Haga to our world; 5 pounds 10 ounces, 18.5 inches long. Clio has a bright future and is fortunate to have exceptional parents and a strong support network.
We see so many children who are not so fortunate as Clio. I challenge each of us to get involved in our communities, the education system, and advocacy to assure every child a running start at life.
