I spent a couple of days at Grand Targhee resort this week. No snow in McCall and it was time to start the ski season. Targhee is one of the few ski areas that has received lots of snow and is in full operation. On top of the excellent conditions, sunny skies, and very few skiers, the lift tickets were free. Holding a Brundage ski pass made the difference – we just paid for our room. First night we had a refreshment at the bar and met Scott and Ashley. It was his birthday and everyone joined in to help him celebrate. The Australian accents were obvious and we learned a bit about them. The two live in Jurien Bay and as they kept saying WA—Western Australia. Jurien is 137 miles from Perth and faces the Indian Ocean. First seen by Europeans in the early 1800’s it was not until 1887 that a jetty was built to accomodate ships. This is a beautiful fishing village that is growing rapidly around the abundant crayfish-Western rock lobster. So what do Scott and Ashley do for a living, you guessed it, they are professional sky divers. The two of them saved up to come to the U. S. and learn to snow Board. They landed in San Francisco and drove until they found snow. I am a fan of Australians and our new friends were no exception. Next stop Jurien.
It is the season and shopping is in order. Karen invited me to shop today – it was good to go out and catch the spirit. I wonder if we lose something by doing all of our thoughtful gift giving on line. I got a few tips on what my spouse may want as we wandered various stores and got reconnected with what my daughters and their families may have on their lists. This is one of the many advantages of retirement. I did find some very funny cards to put in inventory for the future. I encourage you to get out and visit your local retailers and revel in the giving season.
A few funny signs to share to further lift your mood. “I’m silently correcting your grammar”. “It is just a matter of days before they add the word “syndrome” after your name.” “So…it turns out I’m not an afternoon person either.” Finally, “exercise all you want, you can’t burn off crazy.”
Get out there and give until it feels good. Mike
