Adversity eventually confronts and challenges each of us. There are many ways to cope with an unfair or unwanted state of affairs. Life threatening health related afflictions must make you wonder-why me? Understandable that people may sink into deep depression, anger, self pity and even hopelessness. The burden for one’s attitude rests with each one of us. Your friends, relatives, caregivers and fellow patients can be inspired by a positive outlook, fighting spirit, sense of humor, and dogged determination to overcome.
I have a good friend I mentioned a few weeks ago who was diagnosed with a life threatening type of cancer following a very complex surgery. Strong enough now to begin chemo therapy, the first day of a four month treatment protocol was this week. I texted to find out how day one had gone. I got a note back that said ”great first day…staff was outstanding..one treatment down and seven to go.” The reply mentioned that he had been able to sing during his infusion with long time local musician, Kevin Kirk. Kevin volunteers time at Mountain States Tumor Institute and his top quality music talent has to a be comfort to everyone involved.
A few minutes later I got a video of the performance. My friend sang the 1967 hit by Louis Armstrong, “What a Wonderful World”. I am not going to share this inspirational video but do suggest you listen to the original version. The message is especially meaningful sung by a person who could look at the world in a much different way.
“I hear babies crying. I watch them grow
They’ll learn much more than I’ll ever know
And I think to myself what a wonderful world”
A little magic is in order for my friend so I conclude with a quote from J K Rowling of Harry Potter fame. “You will never truly know yourself or the strength of your relationships until both have been tested by adversity.”
As you travel down the dark hall of adversity may the light at the end make you Rich.
