We were enjoying the evening in McCall after a great day on the lake. It has been an unusually cool summer so far in Idaho and that has produced fewer than normal thunder, lightning and cloud bursts.  The temperature did not stop the unsettled weather that led to a power outage and curtailed normal activities for four children’s entertainment.  A great thing happened as we scurried around looking for flashlights, lighting candles and searching phones for power updates- imagination made the day.  Chemiluminescence glow sticks were pressed into action, each child had many circling head, arms, wrists and ankles. We had those balloons that have a light in them and many were quickly inflated and activated. Phones still work so music began to play and the dance contest was on in full force. I now have seen current day moves like the “dab” and “floss” filmed in slow motion with only artificial light. “Dance like no one can see you” seemed to be the thought for the day.  Hattie, Ethan, Hank, and Margie danced and laughed out loud.  The parents and grandparents were equally engaged by the infectious energy.  We have lots of video to verify the events of the evening as well as the disappointment when the power came back on. For nearly two hours, we survived and actually thrived with no power.  It was a very fun evening and I suggest you are not “powerless” to make the best of a challenging situation.

This started me thinking about all the lights that are left on as I walk into every room and instinctively flip the switch.  Oh, yes the power is out is my silent reminder as I go on to the next switch and hope they are now working. You continue your delusion as you put a cup of water in the microwave, at least you can enjoy that in the dark, no power. You are most likely without internet and in McCall we have a well that is powered by electricity. Thank heaven for 4G phones, at least you can call someone and if needed use the flashlight app.  I am a creature of habit and it is amazing how hard those patterns are to break.

Hope you have a creative weekend.  Mike
