Often I hear or see amazing behavior and the best comment I can muster is “really.” Profanity aside the word is used to “declare interest, surprise, or doubt.”  The urban dictionary suggests in true essence the word is pronounced “REAAAAALLLLYY” and is most effective when pronounced for 4-7 seconds; it is a phrase used used to express “astonishment.” The word is unique as it represents a “word question.” If I choose not to use the “R” word it is considered more obnoxious to say “seriously”- another sarcastic statement of disbelief.  I assume you would drag out the pronunciation duration to emphasize the point.  Each day our Fearless leader creates another situation which infuriates, frightens and motivates an acceptable one word response.  Firing a patriot,  Lt. Colonel  Alexander Vindman, Ambassador Marie Yovanovitch, his own Ambassador Sondland, applauding Pompeo’s mis-treatment of an NPR reporter, tweeting about Roger Stone’s sentence, tweeting about the Fed Chairman during his testimony at the House of Representatives, his disrespect for everyone at the National Prayer Breakfast, his hair comment when his bronzer was exposed by the wind – I could go on and on but all deserve the same comment “Really?!?”  I worked with a dear lady early in my banking career and her favorite expression of disappointment or surprise was “doesn’t that just rot your socks.” As the rule of law, our environment, our moral compass, ethics, fairness, our very democracy is under siege we must find a leader who seeks to bring us together.

If you are looking for a positive change of pace, I suggest you invest a hour and a half with Jane Pauley each Sunday morning on CBS news.  The show begins with the memorable notes of a trumpet fanfare and the familiar logo of the sun. The theme song, Abblasen, was written by  Gottfried Reiche in 1727.  It is an uplifting beginning to a show that goes at a moderate pace and focuses much of its reporting on the performing arts.  The reports are interesting, entertaining and upbeat.   Very refreshing viewing and Jane Pauley is an excellent host. The show has a history of exceptional anchors, starting with Charles Kuralt in 1979, passing the baton to Charles Osgood in 1994, and Pauley in 2016. Don’t miss the last few minutes which let you relax and enjoy a few moments in nature. The sounds of the ocean as it ebbs and flows against the rocky shore, a waterfall as it cascades into a pool, birds in a meadow, sea otters playing in the surf, giraffes in the wilds of Africa, a new treat each week. The show is unfortunately followed by Meet the Press, which will likely spoil your mood.

Lake Payette wrapped in a winter blanket was peaceful and still. Enjoy Valentine’s Day.   Mike
