This can never happen to me!  I have too often poked fun at young people thinking they are bulletproof. They may not fully realize that they are vulnerable when they take athletic or health risks.  I am pushing 70, it now dawns on me that I was sure I was not subject to age and do not need to slow down.  Well, last Friday I received a wake up call.  Sitting on my deck enjoying a beautiful spring evening with friends, I passed out.  Turns out hydration is a big deal for humans, young and old.  I had walked the dog, played golf, done some rigorous yard work, coupled with the unseasonably warm temperatures, and a bit of wine and I was out for the count.  Scared everyone including myself and caused lots of extra work for the EMT’s and Fire Department, not to mention all those brave souls in the Emergency room at St. Luke’s. A sincere thanks to the first responders including my spouse, friends, and daughters.

They say pride goeth before a fall,  turns out always pushing the limits was a source of personal satisfaction but eventually put a significant  burden and risk on others.

It took me more than a few days to get back to full strength and a lot of prodding from my family to slow down, take time to recover, stay hydrated,  and not to tempt the fates.  Taking a severe risk, tempting providence, means being worried that it may cause the good luck experienced to end. Over the past week, I have renewed my appreciation for every portion of my life. I have received lots of get well wishes, hugs from my grand girl’s, made a few birdies on the golf course, and I got to help Hank pick out and ride his new bike.  So many things to live for, don’t waste or wait for your wake up call.

Laughter has to be the best vaccine for stress and anxiety relief.  F. Scott Fitzgerald said, “Here’s to alcohol, the rose colored glasses of life.” Murphy reminded us, “Tell a man there are 300 billion stars in the universe and he will believe you.  Tell him the bench has wet paint on it and he’ll have to touch it to be sure.” I recommend each of us will benefit from thanking our lucky stars for all of the advantages we enjoy.

Stay well.  Mike
