It was a truly sad day in Georgia, under the guise of “ensuring our elections are secure, accessible, and fair,” Governor Kemp signed the bill that passed both houses of their legislature in one day.  The new law imposes voter identification requirements for absentee ballot drop boxes and makes it a crime to approach voters in line to give them food or water.  Oh yes, it also allows a committee to overturn county election results or prevent certification. This same tactic is being attempted by the Republican Party across multiple states in our country.  Lawsuits have already been filed to overturn the law. At the same time – the US Senate is braced for a fight over the Democratic supported Elections Bill that would expand voting rights and diminish the Republican efforts to restrict access to the ballot box.  President Biden calls the Georgia bill “sick” and “un-American.” I believe he is correct but prefer to remind us of some of the lyrics of the classic Charlie Daniels song.

“The devil went down to Georgia, was looking for a soul to steal, He was in a bind, ‘cause he was way behind, he was willing to make a deal”

The bet was made and the Devil got Johnny’s soul if he won the fiddle contest. If Johnny won he got the Devil’s shiny golden fiddle. The “evil hiss” of the Devil’s bow was no match for the boys rendition of Fire on the Mountain.  Enjoy the music (insert the link).

Please call anyone and everyone you know to get them involved in protecting our voting rights and our Republic. The history of the Jim Crow laws aimed at voter suppression and disenfranchisement are tragic and not worthy of our country. Amazingly this is retaliation for the loss of the Presidential Election to the Democrats and perpetuate the “big lie”.

Depressing and frightening as politics are in our country, I find it refreshing and energizing to have a leader who is keeping his focus and his promise to represent all Americans.

We cannot lose our sense of humor or hope. My brother Jeff keeps me supplied with puns. “If you have to wear both a mask and glasses, you may be entitled to condensation”. For you environmentalists, “when you teach a wolf to meditate he becomes aware wolf.” And finally, “ghosts like to ride in elevators because it lifts their spirits.”  Keep the faith.

Thank you for wearing that mask, following the guidelines, and protecting others in our community.  Stay positive, test negative.
