I drove to McCall this week to split the rounds I cut this summer. If you drive Highway 55 often you know the narrow canyon road above Smiths Ferry has been under construction for what seems like a very long time. Hallelujah, they are still working on the project but the first mile or so of the road  is widened and repaved with guardrails to stop you from sliding into the river on those snowy roads. They have more to do before they reach the Rainbow Bridge which likely needs to be rebuilt as well.  I only mention this because we have invested $60 plus million dollars so far, way over budget. I am going to say if it saves a life, it was well worth it and leave it at that.  They have also repaved the Long Valley stretch to Clear Creek, thank you Idaho, the road was seriously in need of the work. So much traffic on an outdated route deserves more attention.

The trees are turning color and the deciduous Tamaracks turning yellow ara spectacular sight. This time of the year central Idaho is worth the road trip. The lakes are pristine and not crowded, few people on the hiking trails, cool evenings and beautiful sunny days.  I watched a special on psychedelic drugs as a possible treatment for depression and other mental challenges. I am too old to return to the days of Timothy Leary, so I suggest a few days of solitude enjoying nature and the Indian summer.

Sorry to break the mood. Please plan to get out and vote for the incumbent Board of Trustees at College of Western Idaho.  The group sponsored by the Republican Party is up to no good. Please take a few minutes to follow the North Idaho College debacle under like minded leadership. CWI is an important part of our education system in Idaho. Helping 30,000 students each year; from Adults completing GED, and ESL credit, to career and technical education, on line learning, and workforce development, and four year degrees, EWI is an affordable option to expand  career opportunities. This is not a political issue, the college was built by a collaboration of people wanting to make a difference. Please help assure Molly Lenny, Annie Hightower, Jim Reames, and Nicole Bradshaw continue to lead CWI. Let’s make sure the Republican group has plenty of time to enjoy the great outdoors.

Karen approved a “short and sweet” message for a change, best laid plans…..Enjoy the rain and snow that is heading our way. Skiing soon, I hope.
