I wish you could have been at Thanksgiving dinner for the spontaneous a cappella rendition of the wine song. Well it is actually a song that Doris Day sang to top the charts in 1955, Que Sera Sera was an important part of the Alfred Hitchcock thriller, “The Man who Knew Too Much.” Day sings the song as she and her husband are trying to rescue their young son, he knows the song and his whistling along leads his parents to find and free him. Everyone loved the screen persona of Doris Day and the song is a nice way to remember her.

Grandpa Bob; as Clio, Margie and Hank call him, and I were discussing the best wine to serve with our dinner, when we agreed on a fine Syrah, our old people minds immediately went to the song. Bob was actually in the choir back in the day and can carry a tune, not so with me.  The song is a life progression at each stage from childhood to parenthood asking “what will I be” the answer is called “cheerful fatalism”, “what will be will be.” So I am thankful for a friend with a sense of humor still actively in tact at 96.

I tend to think that we have a bit more control over the future than the song indicates. I remain thankful for our democracy that aspires to freedom and equality for all. That aspiration is only possible with an education system that provides the critical thinking skills needed to set and achieve our own goals.

I am thankful and proud of my family and the integrity and kindness displayed by each of them. I hope you have the same good fortune with those closest to each of you.

Please join me in wishing Hank a very merry 9th birthday.

I hope you had a great Thanksgiving and Black Friday provides exceptional bargains and expedites your Xmas shopping.

What will be will be, I suppose.  Mike
