The Idaho Legislature is back in session. A significant number of the Senate and House members are new to office this term. Fresh faces and new ideas could bring positive change to our Idaho Government. I suppose time will tell, but I am actively involved in educating our Legislators on the dangers of vouchers. In the name of school choice those in the Freedom Foundation and other far right of me thinkers would like to see an end to public education. They would feel good about taking funding from our education system and giving it to a few parents who want their children in private schools. They would tell you the Idaho system is broken. The facts do not support their message.
The Heritage Foundation is a pro Voucher organization and they reported some very interesting data about how Idaho does with the lowest per capital funding in our country. Yes, Idaho ranks 50th in funding, investing $10,170 per student, the Foundation says “Idaho ranks first in the nation overall in return on investment for education (ROI). Idaho ranks 11th place in its combined fourth-grade and eighth-grade math and reading average National Assessment of Educational Progress score….” “Overall ranking among 50 states: Idaho is #3 in overall education freedom, the state ranks last in spending and fourth in Transparency.” On “school choice” Idaho ranks better in the Heritage Foundation view than 30 other states, “Idaho ranks #20. Seen through the lens of a voucher supporter, Idaho’s public schools are meeting their Idaho Constitutionally mandated work of providing quality public education.
Voucher system outcomes in other states do not provide transparency, increase overall costs of education, threaten rural school district viability, and do not clearly provide better outcomes. No vouchers please.
Bob Haga turns 97 on Friday the 27th of January. Bob had pneumonia over the holidays and he is having a very difficult time recovering. I have told you about Bob and the role model he has provided in his long life for co-workers, friends and family. Bob is a listener, no conversation is ever about him, he wants to hear about what is important to you and your family. Everyone I have met at his Assisted living facility smiles when they hear his name, “he is a true gentleman”. If you are so inclined I know Bob would appreciate including him in your prayers or channel him a bit of energy.
Thanks for reading the message and I value your insights and feedback. Bob has made me very aware, “life is not just about me.” Mike
