Each year the Andrus Center holds a conference that is primarily focused on introducing noteworthy female role models and mentors to the attendees.  Each year we have over 650 continual learners join us for a two day event hosted at Boise State University.  Governor Andrus would be proud of the continued success of this portion of his legacy. The father of daughter’s, Cece was keenly aware of the challenges women face in the business and political world.  The Board represents a balance of women and men and the Conference will always be a crown jewel of the mission of the Center. One of our early Keynote speakers was Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O’Connor.   The  retired Justice came to support her work in restoring Civics to our Education system and our society.  This year we have 5 Speakers who promise to move the bar for the Conference to the next level.  The conference also offers Skill Builder break out session on multiple current topics, hosted by exceptional Presenters.

I had so many thoughts to cover this week, I was compelled to talk about the life and contributions to Women’s rights of Gloria Steinem.  Ms. Steinem bravely “challenged sexist assumptions, helping millions of women develop a sense of self worth and gain a measure of equality at work, at home and in society at large.”  Ms magazine, which she co founded was run entirely by women. “When we started, there was not even a term for sexual harassment” Ms Steinem often was quoted, “it was just called life.”  The right for a women to make choices for her own body were taken away by the Supreme Court but States have clawed back some of the protections through Propositions and State legislation. Steinem liked to say, “the truth will set you free, but first it will piss you off.”  She is quoted later in life in regard to her legacy, “I feel proud, and I feel mad as hell we are still dealing with the same issues.”  I believe this quote stands for every human being but Gloria said, “self esteem isn’t everything, it is just that there is nothing without it.” Steinem’s work certainly instilled the notion that every women deserves an equal opportunity.

The picture is a gaggle of sea otters. Megan and her family spent a week in Canada and the pictures they took are amazing. The sea otters live primarily in the coastal waters of Canada and Alaska.  A group of otters floating together is called a “raft” when the otters are frolicking  and playing it is a ‘romp’.  The otter groups float together on the surface, holding paws or wrapping themselves in kelp to keep from being separated—it looks like a “literal wooden raft.” This behavior seems very human, most of us value family, community, inclusion and integrity and work diligently to protect our environment. I am suggesting that our societal raft in the US is at risk. Without freedom of speech, the right to vote, and the commitment that all of us are created equal our nation will break apart in the storm.
The current regime sees opportunity in the chaos they are creating, lets all work to protect our democracy.

Our son in law, Brian, is in Portland and I am very glad to report is doing well after a very challenging surgery. Megan and Katie are there as his support team. That leaves Karen and I trying to substitute as parents. So many of our friends and family have reached out and the “raft” we have built is strong and resilient. Join me in wishing Brian a speedy recovery.
