I received a letter this week encouraging me to support a certain Senator because the liberals are after him. Since most of the country is missing sports, my first thought was to root for the underdog. The majority of Senate Republicans have forgotten their commitment to defend their Article I responsibilities, standing by or remaining silent as Fearless leader jeopardizes the future of our democracy. What happened to the non-partisan ideals that made our country the shining beacon of freedom in the world. Some have called this hopefully short lived phenomenon Trumpism. The Lincoln Project is led by a noteworthy group of Republicans who fear for our country’s future. “Patriotism and the survival of our nation in the face of the crimes, corruption and corrosive nature of the President are a higher calling than mere politics. As Americans, we must stem the damage he and his followers are doing to the rule of law, the Constitution, and the American character.” We cannot take the current polls as an assurance that healing will begin with new Leadership In 2021. Most teams that take their win for granted see momentum shift. All of us who love this country must get or stay involved to assure that Trumpism becomes a sad memory.
I spent some time revisiting Joe McCarthy and his smear tactics against so many innocent citizens and politicians. McCarthyism today is commonly used to mean demagogic, reckless, and unsubstantiated accusations – as well as public attacks on character or patriotism of political opponents. Only one Senator stood up to him initially and McCarthy sent a retaliatory message by working to unseat him. If this history sounds familiar – it appears some of our current Republican Senators fear their leader and stopped following their oath. My theory on this subservience is spawned by the iconic 1956 American science fiction horror film titled Invasion of the Body Snatchers. An extraterrestrial invasion begins when plant spores from space grow into large seed pods, each one capable of reproducing an exact copy of each human. The pods create a doppleganger devoid of all human emotion. I am suggesting the “pod people” have spirited away many of the politicians leaving them incapable of standing up for what is right. Some reviewers saw the story as a commentary on the dangers facing America for turning a blind eye to McCarthyism. I am hopeful we will find a vaccine for our pandemic, racism, and for preciously mentioned “ism’s” before this year ends.
I turn to Ferris Bueller to close, “not that I condone fascism, or any other-ism for that matter. -ism’s in my opinion are not good. A person should not believe in an ism, he should believe in himself.”
