A very good friend of many of us has been valiantly battling pancreatic cancer the past two years. In remission for a long while, the inescapable villain has returned and it seems the battle will soon be over. I struggle with the emotion of sadness, naively believing those with the will power and tenacity can overcome any obstacle. It is selfish for me to hope that his life will be extended if it loses those qualities most valued. Such a tremendous legacy he has created, so many lives touched, such a terrific spouse, exceptional daughters and much loved grandchildren. He has friends all over the country and from every walk of life – we all hope for the best for him and are standing by wishing we could do something meaningful to give comfort. One of his long time friends reminded me that the best medicine is laughter and love. As a patient at MSTI, our good friend entertained those in the “drip lounge” alongside a talented pianist as he underwent his treatments. He loves music and the news of his latest challenge made me think of an old Elton John song.
Sad Songs (Say so Much). The link is attached for you to experience the healing power of music. I believe my friend will listen and smile in spite of the circumstances. Keep singing Rich.
Take a step back this week end and reach out to those who bring meaning to your life. Mike
