It is a joyous season, we are fortunate to have our family together this year in McCall.  To be safe it takes everyone observing the COVID protocols, a few quick tests, and some luck.  I hope you are able to safely join your pod group to celebrate the day and the true spirit of the season.  If it must be a virtual celebration, you can save the hugs for later.

We lost a friend on the 23rd after a long battle with a series of co morbidities.  Schultze was a retired college professor in a little town in Iowa, Pella.  He was born in Idaho and his significant other, Lisa, was with him to the very end. Schultze hiked most of the Idaho trails and spent time in Mexico with students in an emersion type learning program.  He and his father originally owned the cabin next to us in McCall and it was there we became friends. His mother passed away a few years ago at 100 plus and he was proceeded by his father.  As Schultze “shuffled off this mortal coil” he had earned the same send off a friend expects as a farewell for now and to entreat— safe travels. Lisa and his many friends will keep his memory alive.  Vaya Bien to our friend.

It has been a memorable year in so many ways. We can’t give thanks for COVID as it has claimed the lives of over 300,000 Americans and counting.  We can appreciate the work of our dedicated first responders and scientists who have now provided a vaccine. I believe appreciation and admiration is in order for the scientists who are responsible for so many of our advancements.  Global warming and sustainable investing will come together with enlightened governments to help protect the future of our planet.  Democracy and the rule of law will prevail in our country in spite of the best efforts of so many of our politicians. We have our first female VIce President elect who brings a diverse background to our national leadership.  Black lives do matter and the majority of Americans will make it uncomfortable for those who do not agree to gain traction in our country.  We will restore the economy of our country in a more equitable fashion and again prove America is the beacon of hope for the world.

2020 should serve as a reminder of our resilience and our weakness. If we fail to learn from the past we will repeat it. I am reminded of a Shakespeare as I quote one of his many timeless thoughts  “We fail! But screw your courage to the sticking-place, and we’ll not fail.” It is going to take all of us working together, speaking up for what it right—to build it back better.

Enjoy the journey.   Merry Xmas.   Mike
