It was six years ago on Thursday when Margie Marie was born at 4:44. It was a special day. On the same day at 4:45 my brother Bob left this world. Some would argue that it was just a coincidence, maybe so. I prefer to feel it is reminder of the circle of life that is unavoidable for all of us. Bob lived a great life and Margie is already charting her own course. Happy birthday Margie.

On Cinco de Mayo, forty one years ago, Katie Irene Mooney was born. Katie has the good fortune to be born on a day observed with great celebration. Against very heavy odds Mexico seized a victory against invading French troops in l862. It is of note that the fifth of May is not an official Mexican holiday, although they do honor their military on that day. The holiday has evolve into a celebration of Mexican American culture in the United States. Our country is better for the inclusion of the Mexican culture in the fabric of our lives. Happy birthday Katie.

I always enjoyed the singing and song writing of Joni Mitchell. One song that always comes to mind is her l966 hit, The Circle Game. It is a hopeful but melancholy view of life. “Yesterday a child came out to wander-caught a dragonfly inside a jar-fearful when the sky was full of thunder-and tearful at the falling of a star- and the seasons they go round and round-and the painted ponies go up and down-were captured on a carousel of time—“. The lyrics go on to remind us that we do not get to return but we can only look back on what was, we are trapped in a circle game. I do believe it wise to try to learn from our past not modify it to make us feel better.

I received a reply to last weeks message from a native Idahoan who lives in New York. I will call her Erin, she shared her concern for her native state. “I used to brag about being from Idaho-with love and sincerity-but political issues have me disgusted and fearful for the current and future Idaho—especially for my nieces, nephews, your grandkids.” Erin closed on a hopeful note that there was still kindness in Idaho and was encouraged by efforts like Idaho Leaders United.

I am hearing from more and more people who recognize Idaho is too great for hate.
We must raise our voices, checkbooks, and get out to vote to assure Idaho is not led by the paranoia and fear of extremists but by inclusiveness and acceptance.

Enjoy the merry go round that is life. Mike
