I planned to write about the Irish. I have visited the country to play golf and see a few sights. I thoroughly enjoyed the people, the scenery, the pubs and remember the humbling golf course experiences.

I am reading “The Hunter” by Tara Finch. The story is set in a small northern Irish enclave with a retired American policeman as a main character. The writing style is very solid. I have enjoyed the colloquial conversations and many Irish only expressions. “Eejit” is a slang term derived from idiot. Although this could be a term of endearment it is generally intended as an insult. Taken to the next level one could call a person a  “buck eejit”. If you feel less animosity toward someone, they could be a “feckin eejit.”  No surprise I suppose, there are at least fifteen Irish ways of expressing the level assessment of idiocy.  Eejit is only number 12, nicer than flute, gombeen, and plank. “If you really want to eject real venom without cursing, Gobshite, does the trick.

For the reasons mentioned above I am considering officially calling the Great Orange Wanker, by his new pseudonym,  “Gobshite”. The Irish way of letting someone know that “their mouth is metaphorically overflowing with faeces.”  Most everything he says is offensive.

I just watched a Lester Holt segment that toured a portion of the National Monument to Freedom in Montgomery, Alabama. A tribute to the 4 million Black people who won their freedom through the hard fought battles of the Civil War. The Monument Sculpture Park documents the experiences of enslaved Americans. The stories about the over 10 million people who were enslaved is intended to “honor those who struggled and suffered, and those who endured and persevered.” Those MAGA American’s who say anything positive about enslavement and deny the historical facts do us no favors as we pursue equal justice for all. Authoritarians re-write history, as Al Gore stated in his book about climate change, they must change those things that present “an inconvenient truth.”

I am exhausted from watching March Madness. Many great games, upsets, and memorable moments. McNeese State was touted as a Cinderella Story, Gonzaga schooled them. Kansas is next, go Zags.  If you filled out your bracket you have a realistic one in 2 billion chance of getting them all right, no one ever accomplished that feat. Enjoy the games.

The owl is sitting in the tree outside Clio’s house.  Owls bring good luck and serve as a reminder that it is wise to protect our environment and our democracy.

May the luck of the Irish be with ya.   Mike
