Yes indeed that is a car without a human driver. I have read that it is very likely we will see this innovation in large long haul vehicles or delivery trucks before we experience it around town. Regardless, this is true innovation-disruptive in so many ways. Uber is an example of the amazing potential of finding a new solution to addressing demand. Uber projects it will eliminate the cost of drivers in the not too distant future with this technology. Uber did not eliminate taxi and limo drivers but Uber drivers- who monetize their automobile as well as their spare or full time by driving may find themselves out of work. There are many examples of our changing work environment and the skills needed to compete and excel tomorrow. You will not be shocked to read that I believe improvements in our education delivery system are coming even if overdue.
The second meeting of the Governor’s Higher Education Task Force provided a series of speakers whose organizations are focused on the student —improving access, affordability, support networks, innovation, and ultimately outcomes. Sarah Ancel, VP at Complete College America provided a wealth of knowledge. On the monitor we saw a picture of Michael Jordan and a guy that looked like Clark Kent. Sarah asked the group to identify them, Jordan was easy but only one person knew George Mikan. Who changed the game the most? Mikan drew the first three point line with the idea of spreading out the game and making other skills critical. “If you want to change the game you must change the rules.” Jordan shot 17% from beyond the arc when it was still a two point attempt, he finished his career as a 35% shooter.
Ok, what does this have to do with getting students through post secondary education. It takes 15 Credit hours per semester to graduate in four years, make sure the student knows that important detail and the student must see their counselor if they veer off course. Innovation would be lowering tuition rates for students who stay on track. Math pathways is about choosing the right courses. College algebra is not needed or designed to address 21st century literacy skills. Sixty percent of graduates never use algebra again. Co-requisite remediation gets the students skill levels up and they earn credits. 55% of Idaho Students begin in some level of remediation and with a more efficient remediation approach the walk away rate will decrease. Each student must create their own academic map-GPS to graduation. Warnings go off if you need to re-route. I will finish with structured schedules built to span multiple semesters and allow students to coordinate life with their education. Tennessee has seen this discipline improve on time graduation rates to 75% in technical college.
Love that three point line. Higher reward for taking the risk. Go Zags.
