The sharpie was a “sharp-prowed, flat-bottomed New England sailboat, with one or two masts each rigged with a triangular sail. The North American informal definition of sharpie is “a dishonest and cunning person, especially a cheat.” In 1964, Sanford, an ink company, released the first ever permanent marker that “writes like a pen.” A new ink gave the pen the ability to write on almost any surface such as glass, metal, wood and paper. The multi functional pen has made a lot of news this week. Although, the markers are certified non-toxic they should not be used with items that come into contact with food or the mouth. Although not directly connected with delusional behavior, the National Institute on Drug Abuse for teachers says “Sharpies contain volatile solvents, which are liquids that become gases at room temperatures. When inhaled, solvents produce a “high”. They can cause slurred speech, lack of coordination, euphoria and dizziness…” there you have it-the inexpensive but most excellent pen may be responsible for our current state of leadership chaos.
I loved this picture of Megan and the kids painting rocks. Well it started out painting rocks but it quickly changed to painting the drop cloth, then each other, and finally body painting. Lucky kids who have a mother who encourages their imagination and creativity. This event went on for over an hour and provided joy for each of us who watched or participated. Not to worry, the paint was non toxic and water soluble. Spending time with the kids always leads me to ponder the future they face.
I hope you got to watch some of the CNN climate town hall. Seven hours of discussion among the 10 Democratic Presidential candidates. Very frightening when you realize most of the world understands the climate crisis is upon us. Houston has experienced 3 five hundred year storms in the past five years. Dorian is a current reminder of the damage from storm surge and wind as ocean levels rise. This is not a situation we can ignore any longer. Our children and grandchildren should inherit a stable planet. Many of the candidates impressed me with their grasp of the issues and their sense of urgency and passion. The sidelines are not a safe place to be.
“You must be the change you wish to see in the world.” Mahatma Gandhi
Indeed, it will take all of us getting involved to put our country back on track.
Enjoy the week end, M
